RANGERS have opened up discussions with Brazil's biggest club Corinthians which could lead to a number of highly successful initiatives.

RANGERS have opened up discussions with Brazil’s biggest club Corinthians which could lead to a number of highly successful initiatives.

Chief Operating Officer Ali Russell and Director of Football met with the massive Sao Paulo club, who can boast 30 million fans, during their trip to Brazil as part of a Scottish trade delegation.

A number of business and marketing ideas were swapped and there could be scope for the two clubs to swap youth players as part of a development process.

There might even be the chance of Rangers taking on Corinthians in a match either in Brazil or at Ibrox.

Russell told rangers.co.uk: “We are both the biggest clubs in our respective counties and we had some broad discussions. We both have big ambitions and we had a lot to discuss.

“There are options to share in terms of what we are doing in marketing and business building and also in stadium layout.

“They are building a new stadium for the World Cup in 2014 and we can offer a lot of advice on that front.

“Overall we felt there was quite a lot we could do to develop their business and from a football side there may be opportunities for youth players to come to Glasgow and vice versa.

“There is also the potential that we could set up friendly games either in Sao Paulo or in Glasgow.

“We had a very healthy meeting but our discussions are still in the early stages.”

Director of Football Smith said: “If we want to have a relationship with a club then we need to know the set-up and the culture and how the game is run in that country.

“That’s what has been crucial for us if we want to take this relationship forward. We have had good meetings with the key people in the game like club officials and agents.

“We met with Corinthians and we are meeting with Santos too. So we are making good contacts to build relationships and it is giving us an insight into best practice in terms of coaching and development of young players.

“The intelligence we now have on the market in Brazil an indeed the rest of South America is first class. Some of the people we met also deal with Argentina, Colombia, Chile and Peru.

“We met with people who deal with other major European clubs and they have a rich knowledge which is good to tap into if we are interested in a player from that area, for example.”

The new third soccer jersey was presented today where Inter’s current soccer players and professional models wore the kit that it was chosen by the club’s fans via an online vote. The new shirt has two different tonalities of red differentiated by a darker one that runs vertically in the middle and on its sides. On the front side of it Banrisul (Sponsor) runs across the middle of the shirt in white letters just below the chest area. The white Reebok logo is on the top right while on the opposite the club’s badge, in between the two, a hot stamp of the club’s first badge. It has a round collar where the sides are close to the neck and Inter’s flag on the back of it. The shoulders as wells as the sleeves (white hems) have a darker red color with the Tramontina (sponsor) on both sides.

The U.S. women's soccer team might have just left $10 million in endorsements on the table after Sunday's shocking loss to Japan in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The U.S. women’s soccer team might have just left $10 million in endorsements on the table after Sunday’s shocking loss to Japan in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

For the moment, anyway. The U.S. twice lost one-goal leads late in the game and succumbed to the Japanese, 3-1, on penalty kicks in the championship game in Frankfurt, Germany. Instead of winning their first World Cup since 1999 — which turned several players from that team, including Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain, into global endorsers — the Americans might have squandered some marketing opportunities.

The team had spent the better part of the last month capturing the imagination of the public with
their play, including dramatic quarterfinal and semifinal victories over Brazil and France, respectively.

Star forward Abby Wambach and goalie Hope Solo were likely the biggest endorsement losers. Both players were looking at $3 million to $4 million a year in marketing deals — a modest sum predicted by sports marketing experts but still a decent amount for a sport that has had trouble sustaining roots with the American public. The experts said another $2 million could collectively be brought in by remainder of the team.

“Yeah, the defeat cost the U.S. women some heavy endorsement dollars, but I don’t think it’s
a total loss,” said Bob Dorfman, exec VP-executive creative director at San Francisco-based Baker Street Partners and an expert in sports marketing. “The final was an epic match, it likely drew a huge audience, and it made household names of Wambach, Solo and [Alex] Morgan.”

And that was amplified by social media, said Julie Foudy, who was one of the stars of the 1999
U.S. team that became something of a cultural phenomenon when it won the World Cup that was hosted that year in the U.S. The games drew sellout crowds across the country, including more than 100,000 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., for the final against China — the one known for a final kick by Ms. Chastain, who became famous for spontaneously ripping off her jersey to
expose her black sports bra.

Ms. Foudy said there is a big difference between ’99 and 2011 — social media. “With Twitter and Facebook, it’s exponentially shared,” Ms. Foudy, now an analyst for ESPN, said on a conference call prior to the final game. “Word-of-mouth has created such an amazing buzz.”

Twitter said this morning that the Women’s World Cup Final set a new record for the social-networking site with 7,196 tweets per second during the event.

Despite the U.S. women losing out on immediate endorsements that might have come with winning the World Cup, Mr. Dorfman believes it still sets the team up well for marketing deals after next year’s Olympics in London.

“If a stunning loss can still be a win, this was it,” he said. “With the 2012 Olympics just around the corner, women’s soccer will stay relevant, and the U.S. team’s quest for gold will take on added
drama and relevance. Expect Wambach, Solo and Morgan to be highlighted heavily by Olympic sponsors and other advertisers leading up to the Games.”

Ms. Wambach and Ms. Solo were clearly the star players throughout the tournament, but the
22-year-old Ms. Morgan — the youngest player on the team — stole the day on Sunday by scoring one goal and assisting on the other for the Americans.

AC Milan new home soccer jersey was presented at the Adidas Brand Center in Monza yesterday, the new shirts will be first worn in action against Cagliari on Saturday, May 14.

Here’s what Adriano Galliani had to say: “We loved the idea of presenting our shirt for the 2011-2012 season through an event, which thanks to the live online broadcast, reach Milanisti at the same time throughout the world. This initiative is fully in line with the global communication strategy of the club, strongly orientated towards the exploitation of the new media and is present on the most important social networking platforms. I thank adidas for having created once again a really nice shirt, which brilliantly combines the most modern technologies used in sportswear with Milan’s traditions.”

The new home soccer jersey will have thinner stripes and a white crew-neck. As explained on its official website the shirt will have high-tech fabrics combined with a design that brings back memories of Rossoneri shirts from the early years of the 20th century.

Dynamo Dresden a club founded in East Germany wore a special edition soccer jersey against Offenbach Kickers in the last match of the season.

One of the most popular and successful soccer clubs in East German soccer and founded by the east German Police has on his winnings eight league titles. After the reunification of Germany, Dynamo played four seasons in the top division Bundesliga, but since then they were relegated and they are now playing for the 3rd League.

This new soccer jersey manufactured by Jako(Geman Sportswear) is mostly yellow with black details on it. The sponsor (Veolia) was placed across the shirt next to the club’s badge. It has a “V” neck close to the neck collar with black edges; below it there is a black design that crosses the jersey to the right side sleeve.

Last week on the match against Sevilla the Valencia FC made their own tribute to the victims of the Japanese earthquake. The club decided in a solidarity gesture to write the club’s player names in the back of the jersey in Japanese.

The club official statement was the following:

“On Sunday, before the game that we played against Sevilla we kept a respectful silence in memory of the thousands of victims and survivors affected in Japan, a country which has a very special connection with our team which it was seen on the tour that we made in 2004, tremendous affection, respect and support were many of the adjectives that we felt when we visited them. On March the 11th Valencia FC and VCF Foundation contacted the soccer schools located in the cities of Kobe and Osaka. Fortunately all children enrolled are in perfect condition. In addition, one of the surprises that awaited the day, a detail that will remain in the memories and hearts of all fans, not only for Valencia FC, but in the soccer world, the shirts of our soccer players that wore their name in Japanese, in clear show of solidarity for the tragic earthquake and tsunami victims that struck the Asian continent.”

FC Porto just announced that they will renew contract with Portugal Telecom. The agreement will be for another four years at a five million dollar paid annually or more depending on the team’s performance, both in the League and in European competitions.

The previous contract was for 5 years and paid US$30 million in total which will be due in the next two months.

The largest telecommunications service provider in Portugal with many presences around the world, in countries like China, Cape Verde, Brazil and Mozambique among others its of vital importance for the club’s current income. It also sponsors Porto’s rivals the Sporting Lisboa and Benfica. In 2010, they signed Portugal’s national team for 4 years, a partnership that has been ongoing since 1998.
FC Porto announced the contract deal officially, stating “Futebol Clube do Porto, under Article 248 of the Securities Code, hereby informs the market that it has agreed a sponsorship contract with Portugal Telecom, effective until June 30, 2015.

We will probably still see the same uniform kit sponsors in which the Telecommunications Company continue promoting on its home and away soccer jersey, companies like TMN (Mobile Network) and IPTV service.

The Vancouver Whitecaps a Canadian professional soccer club that was granted last year to play for the MLS (Major League Soccer), is schedule to begin play in the 2011 MLS season. Due to the lack of fans, the club’s marketing department decided to launch this video to awake Vancouver’s people enthusiasm. This is generated by doing body painting on an attractive model which reproduces the Whitecaps’s Adidas kit in detail. There was a lot of criticism and controversy generated from this video presentation; however, this commercial has brought worldwide repercussion as well as distribution.

Kim Jackman, Marketing director for the franchise, defended himself from criticism.” We did not want to offend anyone, is well covered,” he said. He noted that soccer fans “sing songs, paint their faces and, yes, paint their bodies.”
