Liverpool Football Club continue their pioneering use of social media becoming the first Premier League club to launch on the Pinterest network, the world’s fastest growing new social media site (pinterest.com/officiallfc/).
Despite only having 10,000 users at the start of 2011, Pinterest, a website that allows users to create virtual pinboards where they can collect and share with the world the photos that have caught their attention on the web, has grown at an incredible pace. By January 2012, traffic had grown from 10,000 unique users to 11.7 million, making it the fastest site in history to break through the 10 million unique visitor mark.
LFC’s Pinterest’s launch last week followed another first for the club when it became the first professional team in the top flight to launch on Tumblr.
The Tumblr photo blog, already being followed by thousands of fans and entitled The Reds Gallery, allows supporters to enjoy some of the best unseen photography from the LFC archives stretching back over 100 years and provides a simple way to order prints and framed copies of all the photos featured.
The club said on its website:
“With Pinterest we’re again focusing on fantastic images to share with fans but unlike The Reds Gallery on Tumblr, which is a much more traditional and linear photo blog, we’re using Pinterest in the way it was originally designed – as aN online scrapbook and pinboard where we share photos of the people, places and items that either inspire us, make us proud or make us laugh.
“We’re also using our different themed LFC Boards on Pinterest to bring some of the club’s history and passion to a new audience for the 21st century. With so much choice on the internet, we recognise that today’s young and new fans may not have time to read realms and realms of text about Liverpool’s glorious past, present and future and that’s why we’re always looking for new ways to interact with supporters online. Whether you’ve been attending matches for years, live in a far, foreign land or are just beginning your love affair with Liverpool, we aim to have something that captures your imagination.”
