The entire Sydney FC squad was presented with their 2012/13 playing shirt in front of the fans with enthusiastic applause meeting every player before Del Piero was presented to the crowd, receiving an ovation usually saved for a Sydney FC goal at The Cove end.
Del Piero, Brett Emerton and Captain Terry McFlynn spoke to the fans after the squad was put through a brief training session under the watchful eye of Coach Ian Crook.
The players then spent an hour signing autographs with the fans with the entire squad walking the length of the Allianz Stadium touchline to get up close and personal with the fans.
Mums, dads, kids and adults stood side by side on the fence waiting for the Sydney FC stars and they were not disappointed.
“This is a great day,” Del Piero said. “The people of Sydney have been great in welcoming me. It was good to share this with my team mates.”
Sydney FC Captain Terry McFlynn, who has been with the Sky Blues since its inception, was impressed with the turn out. “This is tremendous,” McFlynn said. “To share this day with all of the boys, to soak up the crowd, is fantastic. As a team we just can’t wait for the season to start.”
