The new kit was premiered last Friday when “los charruas” defeated Chile by 4 goals for the FIFA 2014 CONMEBOL qualification round, something to remark, all 4 goals were scored by the international sensation Luis Suarez (Liverpool).

The white Puma logo is on the center at the chest area, on the right side close to the shoulder area a darker sky-diagonal blue band with a watermarked sun inside of it. On the left hand side Uruguay’s national badge with its four stars inside of it. The shirt has a white round collar neck with the national flag embroidered inside of it, and the word Uruguay placed on the back, just below the neck area. It has plain sky-blue sleeves with the white Puma logo on its sides and white hems.

The two outstanding players that the Uruguayan National team has are saying goodbye to their home country, they came to Penarol through Bella Vista, but now they will continue with their careers in Italy without even wearing for one match Penarol soccer jersey.

Pablo Cepellini, an attacking midfielder was signed to play with Peñarol a few weeks ago from Bella vista is now leaving to play for the Italian team Cagliari. Same luck had Federico Rodriguez, teammate with Cepellini in Bella Vista, and in the National team, will depart to Europe as well, but different destination, more precisely Genoa.

The amazing thing about this story is that they were both Peñarol soccer players, but without even put it in a step on Aromos (Penarol’s Stadium), they departed to Peru to play for the FIFA youth Championship and while departing they were told by Pablo Bentancurt (Player’s Representative) that they will leave to Italy for the low amount of 400 thousand euros after the tournament is over.

Nacional is one of the few clubs in the world that happen to maintain its same soccer jersey design since it was founded on 1899 and through out the years, we can see little or no changes on its jersey design. The first three years it had the colors of the Artigas flag which it was a red jersey with blue accents on its sides and neck. Then for economical reasons (its red jersey was done with bad quality materials when washed its color faded), it eventually changed to its classical white with a pocket on the left side. Here it’s when the term “bolso” or “bolsilludo” comes from. From 1950 and thereafter, there was only one minimal cosmetic change which it was its right pocket, that it was seamed on its borders, late after that year it disappeared and it was only the emblem attached on the right side of its jersey.

On the 18th century, more precisely 1891 the Central Uruguay Railway Company bought 18 acres, 8 miles outside Montevideo, where the place was called Peñarol. The company started to work on that area four months prior to the foundation of the now known Club Atletico Peñarol, its first club name was known as C.U.R.C derived from this Railway Company, and had on his soccer jersey, the colors of one of their famous railroad which it was called the Rocket. It was designed by George Stephensen and it had the yellow and black colors on it. In 1891 CURCC’s Soccer jersey design consisted in two vertical halves, black on the right side and yellow strips on the left, and the classic black shorts and socks. In 1901 now known as Peñarol (former C.U.R.C) transformed the soccer jersey design, and it was changed to vertical black and yellow stripes and since then the basic color has never been changed and will probably remain the same way for the good of soccer jersey fanatics.

History

At the begining of the twentieth century, the teams of Argentina and Uruguay played continuously between them. The Uruguayan teams dreamed of beating the powerful Alumni team from Argentina, which only lost 2 tournaments between 1900 and 1911 (this is the year they disappeared). The 10th of April of 1910, in Parque Central, River Plate of Montevideo beat a Alumni 2 to 1, using a sky blue jersey because their regular jersey was similar to the one of Alumni. At the sixth edition of Limpton Cup, the argentinians proposed that Uruguay changed its striped jersey, which was similar to the one of Argentina, because that uniform was officially adopted by “Argentine Association Football League”.

The delegate from Montevideo Wanderers, another Uruguayan team, Ricardo Le Bas, proposed that in order to honor the victory of River Plate against Alumni, the Uruguayan national team should use a sky blue jersey. Le Bas initiative, supported by the president of the league, Hector R. Gomez (who made this requests as one of his own), was approved by all the members of the parliament of the Uruguayan league. The 15th of August of 1910, Uruguay, wearing for the first time the sky-blue jersey (or “Celeste” as it is well known) beat Argentina 3 to 1 in Montevideo Wanderers field, in Belvedere).
