The new home soccer jersey is mostly red with yellow and green details on it. On the top front side the player’s number (yellow color) while on the opposite the national team’s badge, and in between the black Puma Airness Logo. There is a green and yellow diagonal band that starts at the right shoulder all the way to the left side of the chest. It has a bicolor (yellow, red) cut in “v” neck. There are no details on its shoulders and on its red sleeves with a yellow detail on its hems.

Henry, who made 370 appearances for the Club and is the Gunners’ all-time leading goalscorer with 226 goals, has been maintaining his fitness at London Colney since November during the MLS off-season.

Speaking about the deal, Arsène Wenger, said: “I am very happy. It was my desire and Thierry’s desire. We will have Thierry for January and in February. Then he will go back to the United States. I am sure during these two months he will be a massive asset to the team in the dressing room and on the pitch. He can be relaxed, not under too much pressure and be a tremendous help to the team.”

UEFA has confirmed that the BBC and ITV will be the official UK broadcasters of Euro 2012.

The confirmation of the deal comes follows the agreement between the two leading British free-to-air broadcasters of how they will divide up live coverage of the 31 games in the tournament. The broadcasters will each show 15 matches exclusively live, and will share live coverage of the final.

With live coverage of the European Championships finals protected for free-to-air television under the UK ‘crown jewels’ broadcast law, both BBC and ITV had already agreed in principle to show the tournament. Both will carry coverage across their mobile and internet platforms, while the BBC has also secured the live radio rights.

Guy Laurent-Epstein, the marketing director of UEFA Events SA, said: “Uefa is delighted to continue its relationship with the BBC and ITV, our traditional broadcast partners for the UEFA European Championships. We look forward to working with the UK’s leading free-to-air broadcasters and are convinced that they will provide fans in the UK with an exceptional depth of coverage of the tournament across all media platforms.”

ITV controller of sport Niall Sloane said: “Major events such as the Euro 2012 championships have huge significance for our viewers and attract some of the biggest audiences on television. I’m delighted that ITV has secured an outstanding selection of games through the tournament which includes England’s opening game against France as well as a potential peak time group decider against hosts Ukraine. ITV1 will also be the home of some terrific clashes between the top teams in Europe including Spain v Ireland, Spain v Italy, Portugal v Holland and Ireland v Croatia.”

Philip Bernie, the head of TV sport for the BBC, added: “The BBC is delighted to be showing the Uefa European Football Championship, a huge football event, which, along with the London Olympics, should ensure a fantastic sporting summer for BBC viewers. We are very happy with the live matches on BBC One, as they give us a strong climax to the event, with both semi-finals, as well as England’s quarter-final if they progress. We also have some very appetising group games, including England’s second match, against Sweden, in peak time, Ireland’s final match, against Italy, and heavyweight clashes between Holland and Germany and Germany and Portugal.”

UEFA Euro 2012 will begin on Friday 8th June, with hosts Poland taking on 2004 champions Greece at the National Stadium in Warsaw. The game will be shown live in the UK by the BBC.

Elite football is not totally immune from the recession after all: the six national teams in Europe with the most lucrative headline sponsorships will go to Euro 2012 with combined deals worth less money than they had at the 2010 World Cup.

Elite football is not totally immune from the recession after all: the six national teams in Europe with the most lucrative headline sponsorships will go to Euro 2012 with combined deals worth less money than they had at the 2010 World Cup.

While top club wages, bonuses, endorsement deals and TV deals continue to defy the recession, international football associations appear to have been hit in the pocket by the economic downturn.

According to separate findings by the sports marketing companies

SPORT + MARKT and PR MARKETING the FAs of Germany, England, Italy, the Netherlands, France and Spain have taken a combined hit of £6.4m a year compared to their deals enjoyed in 2010.

The 2010 deals v the 2012 are as here (story continues below):

National associations are reluctant to confirm the exact values of their sponsorship arrangements, but research by these well connected companies offer the best alternative data.

The biggest financial losers are the English FA, following the FA’s decision to accept a £5m a year deal with Vauxhall – an estimated hit of £3.6m a year on its previous headline sponsorship deal with Nationwide.

The German Football Association has lost an estimated £2.5m a year compared with its previous arrangement with Mercedes – but continues to enjoy the most lucrative deal of its kind.

From the six major deals across Europe, only the French Football Federation has enjoyed a moderate increase of £500,000 a year compared with 2010.

International sides tend to have more than one sponsor, but the headline sponsor is the most lucrative deal and the company involved tends to have its branding appear on team training kits and leisure wear, tickets, backdrops during press conferences and signs at home games and training sessions.

Dr Peter Rohlmann of PR MARKETING told Sportingintelligence: “The recession is a substantial factor for getting new sponsors at the same level as in an economic boom.

“But my experience is that the influence of sporting failure and negative affairs, for example with Italy and England, has been more important for the acquisition of new sponsorships by the football associations than the economic environment.”

The English FA is about to take a hit in the value of its domestic TV deal with ITV although foreign rights values are expected to growth to around £48m a year.

As Sportingintelligence reported in October, England’s £26m-a-year kit deal with Umbro is second only to France in the world of football in terms of high value.

Qatar-based satellite broadcaster Al Jazeera has significantly strengthened its presence in France by snapping up four of the country’s five media rights packages for the UEFA Champions League from 2012-15.

Qatar-based satellite broadcaster Al Jazeera has significantly strengthened its presence in France by snapping up four of the country’s five media rights packages for the UEFA Champions League from 2012-15.

Al Jazeera will broadcast 133 matches live across its television channels, internet and mobile services every season, and the broadcaster has also committed to “significant pre-match preview programming and highlights” on both Champions League match nights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The broadcaster recently acquired domestic rights to Ligue 1 in France from 2012-16, and the acquisition of Champions League rights represents another major step into the European market. Al Jazeera has also tabled a Eur130 million bid for French rights to UEFA Euro 2012, reportedly a higher figure than rival offers from TF1 and M6’s joint-bid of Eur100 million.

The broadcaster recently refused to comment on reports that it is considering entering the UK sports pay-television market by bidding for domestic English Premier League broadcast rights from the 2013-14 season. Al Jazeera, which announced recently that it would launch a new sports news channel in the Middle East and North Africa and also linked up with digital sports media company Perform to launch streaming service Al Jazeera Sport TV, is thought to be planning to launch or acquire its own channel in France, to provide a platform for its rights, and has spoken to Orange about such a project.

“UEFA welcomes the opportunity to develop a partnership with Al Jazeera in France,” read a statement from UEFA. “We highly value their production expertise and commitment towards the UEFA Champions League in the Middle East and North Africa and we look forward to being part of their channel development in France. The level of interest in the UEFA Champions League rights confirms the continuing strength of the competition.”

The remaining Champions League package – the premium live match package of 13 first-choice live match picks, including coverage of the final and the weekly magazine show – is still to be awarded. In addition, no rights have been awarded so far for the UEFA Europa League in France. The deal was brokered by Team Marketing, the marketing partner of European football’s governing body for its top club competitions. Last week it was announced that Nasser al-Khelaifi, the president of Al Jazeera Sport and chairman of French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain, had been named Sports Innovator of the year by SportBusiness International magazine.

Italian champions AC Milan are to take on Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain in Dubai on Wednesday, January 4.

The eagerly anticipated clash to be held at Al Ahli’s Rashid Stadium is sure to be star-studded affair with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Brazilian superstars Robinho and Alexandre Pato for AC Milan, plus Javier Pastore, Jérémy Ménez and Kevin Gameiro for PSG likely to be on show.

If that wasn’t enough the fixture also throws up the mouth-watering prospect of both David Beckham and Carlos Tevez making their debuts for PSG and Milan respectively should their rumoured moves be completed in the coming weeks.

Beckham, 36, has been heavily linked with a move to PSG in recent months and is said to be close to penning a lucrative 18-month deal at the Parc des Princes, while Milan yesterday confirmed they have been given permission by Manchester City to talk to wantaway star Carlos Tevez.

Another intriguing sub-plot should Beckham seal his switch to the ‘City of Light’ would see the former England captain come up against the club he enjoyed two three-month loan spells with in 2009 and 2010, the last of which under the guidance of Leonardo, PSG’s current sporting director.

Dubai promotion

The Dubai Football Challenge will be the culmination of Milan’s annual Emirates-sponsored winter training camp, which will see the 18-time Serie A champions make the most of Dubai’s fantastic weather and training facilities as they did 12 months ago.

PSG, who are also sponsored by Emirates, will jet into the UAE to step up their preparations for the season’s resumption on January 14 following Ligue 1′s enforced winter break which gets underway on December 22.

Hamad Mohammad Bin Mejren, Executive Director Business Tourism at DTCM, said: “We are looking forward to a successful fourth edition of the Dubai Football Challenge with two great teams like AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.

“As part of The Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing strategies to promote Dubai, this event will contribute to positioning Dubai as a leading tourism and sport destination and stimulate visitors from key targeted markets around the world.”

Ahmad Khoory, Emirates Senior Vice President for the Gulf, Middle East and Iran, said: “As the shirt sponsor of both AC Milan and PSG, it is a real coup for us to bring these two world-class teams to Dubai.

“Emirates is involved with football sponsorships around the globe so being able to offer fans in the UAE the chance to experience top-class international teams up close is an excellent way of leveraging our sponsorship benefits.”

This is the first time a soccer club has involved supporters to design and create their shirt for its team. It was back in February when Olympique invited all its fans via OM.net to participate in the creation of its own soccer jersey. The new kit was selected from out of 60,000 proposals. Ten of them were selected by a jury, and then posted on the club’s facebook page and Adidas’.

Betclic (Sponsor) runs across the middle of the shirt at almost the chest level in gold letters with white borders. The gold adidas logo is on the top right while on the opposite the club’s badge in sky-blue. It has a polo cut in “v” neck, followed by black shoulders with the adidas three stripes on it that go all the way to the end of its black sleeves.

Major League Soccer has surpassed the NBA and NHL in attendance and is now the third-most attended professional sport in America on a per-game basis.

Yep, you read that right.

Sporting News reports that this season, average attendance for the MLS’s 18 teams rose 7.2 percent to 17,872 per game, enough to leapfrog both last season’s NBA (17,323) and NHL average (17,132). The sport, however, is still miles behind the NFL (66,960) and MLB (30,352).

The MLS says that in this nation of immigrants, the world’s most popular sport is booming in the country because of its foreign influence. The teams’ rosters include players from 60 countries. Sixteen percent of MLS players are Latino, no doubt attracting the MLS’ strong Hispanic following that accounts for a third the league’s fan base.

And look so far as any teenage girl’s bedroom wall to know the most famous foreign player of them all: Englishman David Beckham, who transferred nearly five years ago to the league from Spanish giants Real Madrid for a cool $250 million. The LA Galaxy midfielder, whose contract expires after this season, has spectators flocking to stadiums all over the country, and he has paved the way for legends like Frenchman Thierry Henry to join ranks, as well.

Major League Soccer has also made some savvy business moves along the way, signing television deals with networks like ESPN and FOX, and partnering with NBC in 2012.

Finally, the MLS recognized the Northwest as a passionate soccer hotbed (who knew?), aggressively expanding with the Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps. The Seattle Sounders lead the league in attendance with 38,496 per game, more than doubling the league average.

The league’s tally surpasses even the inaugural season, when it averaged 17,406 spectators a game. “It’s historic for us — we exceeded our best with 18 teams, and we only had 10 back then,” said MLS President Mark Abbott. “We have Montreal joining next year, and we believe that we will have a very positive story in that market as well.”

And watch out, English Premier League: the MLS is now the tenth-most attended soccer league in the world.

The only problem is that the capital club had not anticipated such enthusiasm and now finds itself a victim of its own success.

Reports in media suggest that the sale of PSG jerseys could reach record levels this season.

Far exceeding the sales of Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais, PSG are already finding it hard to manufacture shirts for fans which means that the club’s growing popularity is not showing any signs of stopping.

The club has already made a lot of profit through jersey sale and it has been predicted that by the end of the campaign shirt sales would hit an all-time record.

In order to meet the growing demand of fans, PSG have asked sponsor Nike to manufacture 20,000 jerseys in Thailand and ship them to France via the Netherlands within a week.

In terms of name of jerseys, Javier Pastore and Kevin Gameiro are the biggest trendsetters followed closely by Nene and Jeremey Menez. According to a statistic, every second fan who buys a PSG shirt buys a shirt with Pastore’s name on it. Nene and Gameiro are far behind the Argentine star.

David Beckham is on the verge of joining Les Parisiens which means that shirt-sales would go even higher given the international profile of the former Manchester United man. Nike and PSG are already rubbing their hands over the prospect of having a world brand like Beckham on their side.

With the advent of a new era at the Parc des Princes, one can only imagine PSG to become one of the biggest clubs in Europe the way Qataris are doing things at the club. Currently PSG boast one of the most formidable attacking units in Europe and it’s only a matter of time when PSG would be rubbing shoulders with the best teams in world.

The recent shirt sale phenomena could be considered as a start to an era of dominance of a club that has not won a league title for over a decade.
