Urawa Red Diamonds (浦和レッドダイヤモンズ, Urawa Reddo Daiyamonzu) a professional association soccer club that currently plays in Japan’s soccer league, J. League Division 1. One of Japan and Asia’s best supported teams, the club has been able to boast the highest average crowds for 14 of the J-League’s 21 season history. Last Thursday the team managed by Mihailo Petrovic presented its new home, away and third soccer jerseys for the 2012 season made by Nike.

The new home soccer jersey is mostly red with white, gold and black details on it. On the front side of the shirt, Savas (Sponsor) runs across the middle at the chest level in black letters with a white background and black borders. On the top right a golden Nike logo while on the opposite the club’s badge. It has a buttoned polo with black side’s neck. There are no details on its shoulders and on its sleeves with no hems.

On the other hand, the away and the third soccer jersey have same design and template, but with different colors. On the alternative shirt, the main color is white with red (diamond design) and black details on it, when the third soccer jersey is characterized by having a black background color with navy blue (diamond) and white details on it.

The new third soccer jersey has a black background with blue horizontal stripes on its front side. Bimbo (Sponsor) runs across the middle of the shirt below the chest line, and just above the BBVA Bancomer in white letters. The white Nike logo is on the top right while on the opposite the club’s badge. It has a black round collar neck. There are no details on its shoulders, and they are followed by black with no hems sleeves.

The home kit keeps its traditional purple, in light and dark hues that create a checked effect which apparently represents the mountains and islands that make up Hiroshima Prefecture.

One of the two away uniforms is a bright orange color inspired by the color of Itsukushima Shrine’s O-torii gate, with a striped effect reminiscent of the Goju-no-to five-story pagoda also on Miyajima.

Owned by New Balance, Warrior will replace Adidas, producing Liverpool’s home, away and third kits and the team’s training wear in a deal that begins on 1 June 2012. The deal is understood to be worth £25m a year to Liverpool.

Warrior have traditionally been associated with ice hockey and lacrosse in the US, but their general manager, Richard Wright, said: “We are here to shake up the world of football.”

Ian Ayre, the club’s managing director, said: “This is another landmark deal for Liverpool Football Club and once again shows the value of the club’s brand globally. Warrior Sports will bring its own unique brand and ideas to the partnership, ensuring they can assist us at the club both on and off the field of play.”

Liverpool say they expect to earn a staggering £300m through their new six-year deal with the US sportswear company Warrior Sports, and have denied accusations that underachievement on the pitch led to the collapse of their current kit deal with Adidas.

Warrior, owned by New Balance, will become the club’s kit supplier from June having agreed a £25m-a-year deal to enter the football industry for the first time. The £25m per year is a guaranteed figure for Liverpool, not performance-related, and eclipses the £23.5m-a-year deal that Manchester United have with Nike but are currently renegotiating.

With Warrior, Liverpool will control all non-branded merchandising – products outside the usual kit range – and are free to open club stores wherever they choose. That is not the case under Adidas, who control Liverpool’s kit supply and the sale of non-branded merchandise, and the club believe they can double the £25m a year from Warrior when the current restrictions are lifted this summer.

Liverpool’s managing director, Ian Ayre, explained: “Our business is split in two. We have what you call kit, the branded products, the stuff the players wear, and that’s the part of the business that the deal with Warrior covers. In our existing deal, there have been some restrictions on that in terms of the other unbranded products we sell, general retail. That sat within our deal with Adidas in certain lines and in certain markets.

“In our new deal, we have complete control of that. We will still work with Warrior, but we will have a much wider opportunity. That area of business currently represents 50% of everything we generate. The new deal represents half of what we currently generate, so we still have another opportunity to develop similar kind of revenues and that’s what encouraged us.”

Herbert Hainer, chief executive of Adidas, claimed the German company withdrew from negotiations to extend its six-year contract with Liverpool as: “We thought that what Liverpool were asking and what they were delivering was not in the right balance.” Liverpool have, however, secured a £25m-a-year deal despite not qualifying for the Champions League for the past two years and Ayre insists the club’s global appeal ensured Adidas’s requirements were met.

“I’m happy that we delivered absolute value for a partner like Adidas and we will continue to deliver that value for Warrior,” Ayre said. “We shared all the numbers with everybody we spoke to and I don’t think it would surprise anyone to know that Liverpool are one of the biggest merchandising businesses in football and we wouldn’t have had so many people interested if we didn’t have a great business. We ran a very exciting process over 12 months. We worked very hard to speak to every major manufacturer in the sportswear category and we had winners and losers. Some people are very disappointed and some people are very happy.”

Rather than taking a risk with a company unknown in football – Michigan-based Warrior were synonymous with lacrosse and hockey before last year becoming supplier to the Boston Red Sox, the baseball club that shares owners with Liverpool – Ayre believes the club will benefit as the company’s main priority. That, it is suspected at Liverpool, has not always been the case with Adidas. Liverpool’s MD added: “What really encouraged us is that this is their first foray into football and so we are their only customer and they will be very focused on Liverpool Football Club and promoting this opportunity around the world.”

At yesterday’s Dubai International Sports Conference, top football officials discussed diversifying revenue streams in light of mounting costs — 56 per cent of clubs in Europe run at an annual loss despite combined revenue increases of €12-13 billion, with many still forced to spend beyond their means to compete. It was revealed 64 per cent of each club’s average revenue is spent on transfers and wages.

‘New technologies’

Rosell said: “In order to balance your expenses, new technologies in Asian markets are the only way forward. We’ve just got a contract with a Chinese webpage developer and we are trying to get a euro from every Chinese internet user a year. That would give us €1.3 billion extra annual income. Of course we won’t get this, but we aim towards such figures.

“We can’t increase income from TV rights and it’s almost impossible given the current crisis to increase our marketing. The stadium gets 1.5 million visitors per year to our shop and museum but we are sold out every year and cannot increase capacity.

“The only way to make significant increase in revenue is to adopt new technologies like the internet and the future way to go is the Chinese market. “It’s not easy. The markets are completely different, but we have to take advantage. Thanks to titles on the field we have 180,000 members. We’ve stopped membership with the exception of those under 14 years of age because we know that if they become a member now they will be so for life.

“You change your car, apartment and wife but you can never change your club. Our passion is to reach the children because Barcelona is considered the club of the children, since our support of Unicef.”
