When most people around the world think of Brazil, wine is not something that springs to mind.

Even in the country itself, most Brazilians don’t give fermented grape juice much thought.

It is very much a beer drinking nation, lager to be specific. And served as cold as possible to refresh in the hot weather.

Yet Brazil has had a small wine industry for hundreds of years, started by the first Portuguese settlers, and then continued by Italian immigrants.

For, despite the widespread perception that Brazil has a tropical climate too hot and humid for grapes, in the far south of the country, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul that borders Uruguay, the more temperate weather is ideal for planting vineyards.

Currently exporting only very small quantities, the Brazilian wine industry has high hopes that the country’s staging of the 2014 World Cup can be used as a springboard to achieve ambitious overseas sales growth.

Speaking at the Soccerex Global Convention in Rio de Janeiro, the annual gathering of football business leaders, Ana Paula Kleinowski from Wines of Brasil, the national trade body, says the World Cup can help put Brazilian wines on the map.

“2014 is going to give Brazilian wine a tremendous promotional opportunity,” she says. “We can use it to showcase the quality and range of our wines, and drive export growth.

“Brazilian wines are the only ones available at Soccerex, which we are very proud of, and come the World Cup we intend that as many visiting football supporters as possible can easily find and try them.

“And then continue to be able to buy them when they return home.”

Good reviews

Brazil’s wine growers may be targeting the world, but they have a long way to go to catch up with fellow South American wine producers Argentina and, especially, Chile.

Last year Brazil exported just $3.3m (£2.1m) worth of wine, compared with $1.6bn from Chile.

However, the only way is up for the Brazilians, and they have recently started targeting seven countries – the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and Poland. In addition to Hong Kong.

In the UK, you can now buy Brazilian wines from a number of smaller wine merchants, and Ms Kleinowski says feedback from some of the UK’s best-known wine critics has been very positive.

“Jancis Robinson and Oz Clarke have both recently given Brazilian wines very good reviews, it is just a question of us getting more people to taste them.

“The quality is there, and the prices are reasonable.”

Award winning

Talking of taste, is Brazilian wine really any good?

The simple answer is a resounding yes.

The best Brazilian wine is typically made from French grape varieties, and the country produces the full range of red, white, rose, sweet, and sparkling wines.

The latter is made in exactly the same way as champagne to produce the bubbles naturally.

The reds and whites taste similar to Chilean wines, and while the fizz might lack some of champagne’s finesse, if someone gave you a bottle you’d be very happy.

Arley Firmino Pereira is winemaker at Miolo Wine Group, which was founded in Rio Grande do Sul in 1897 by an Italian family.

“We already sell our wines to one UK wine company, and it is going very well,” he says.

“Our vineyards enjoy a very nice temperature, and very good soil. This is reflected in the quality of our wines, and our 2005 merlot won a global prize for the best merlot for less than $100 in a blind tasting test.”

Mr Pereira adds that Brazil’s winemakers also have a giant domestic market to conquer, where the average Brazilian currently drinks just two litres of wine per year.

That is equivalent to what thirsty wine fans in Europe will polish off in a weekend.

Price critical

Yet if the Brazilian wine industry wishes to make a substantial breakthrough in the UK and across continental Europe, it has to crack the big supermarkets.

Wine critic Robert Joseph says it may all come down to price.

“Basically in Britain most consumers will buy any wine if it is cheap,” he says.

“So if Brazilian wine can get its prices right, and promote itself, it could be a success in the UK.

“In general they aren’t making great wine yet in Brazil, but it is OK, it is do-able.”

UK wine merchant Oddbins says that while it currently doesn’t sell any Brazilian wine it would be keen to if the demand was there from its customers.

Emma Nichols, head of buying at Oddbins, says: “Oddbins could quite happily stock Brazilian wine, but it really depends on the quality.

“Our customers are always interested experiencing new and interesting wine. But we won’t stock something simply for the novelty value – it has to taste fantastic.”

New shirt? What’s the difference?

“Why always me?” – well, Mario, maybe it’s because you’re a bit of an eejit!

In Italy’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Uruguay, the City star appeared for the second half of the game wearing the Azzurri’s old shirt, rather than the swanky brand new one which had been unveiled in the run-up to this game, and which he had worn for the first-half.

Only after a stoppage, when the striker was booked for a foul on Diego Perez, were the Italian staff able to get the striker to change his top.

Is there no end to the Madness of King Mario?

Watch his foul and shirt-swap here…

The new kit was premiered last Friday when “los charruas” defeated Chile by 4 goals for the FIFA 2014 CONMEBOL qualification round, something to remark, all 4 goals were scored by the international sensation Luis Suarez (Liverpool).

The white Puma logo is on the center at the chest area, on the right side close to the shoulder area a darker sky-diagonal blue band with a watermarked sun inside of it. On the left hand side Uruguay’s national badge with its four stars inside of it. The shirt has a white round collar neck with the national flag embroidered inside of it, and the word Uruguay placed on the back, just below the neck area. It has plain sky-blue sleeves with the white Puma logo on its sides and white hems.

PUMA today launched the new official playing home kit of the Italian National Football team. Stefano Caroti, Chief Commercial Officer of PUMA SE presented the shirt to the Azzurri captain Gianluigi Buffon and FIGC Marketing Manager Benedetta Geronzi, at the Centro Sportivo La Borghesiana in Rome. The Italian National Team will wear the new home kit for the first time against Uruguay tomorrow in Rome, a game that will mark the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, and in the lead up to and during The 2012 UEFA European Football Championship in Poland and Ukraine.

The new Italian Football home kit takes its inspiration from one of the world’s most powerful teams, and is designed for the most powerful of performances. The shirt boasts four stars, representing the four FIFA World Cup victories the Azzurri have enjoyed in their history, the official FIGC badge and a classic vintage styling. The slim fit shirt has a 3D graphic embossed print and a welded patch pocket.

The 4-way stretch underarm panel, cuffs, and back mesh enhance freedom of movement, fashioned after on-pitch player jerseys. Finally, the flat knit rib collar with contrast tipping and tonal bottomless placket add a bit of retro styling to this modern, fast-forward design. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, the collar has been personalized with the “tricolore,” the three colors of the Italian flag.

A full range of replica shirt, shorts and socks were also launched worldwide today, along with a merchandise collection. For the first time, PUMA has included a QR code woven label in the home replica shirt, which when scanned takes people on a special journey through the history of the Italian national team, exclusively on www.puma.com/football.

“Materials, design and graphics change day by day, but the charm of the Italian shirt remains the best expression in the world of football,” said Antonello Valentini, General Director of FIGC.

“This new shirt represents the long partnership between PUMA and FIGC, emphasizing the common values our brands share, as well as the importance of style and traditions. It represents a new step in our relationship, not only in a commercial sense, but as the expression of a new vision to encourage charity initiatives, and in particular to promote the Italian national team as the ultimate expression of Italian Football.”

Gianluigi Buffon, Italian National Football Team Captain said, “Modern football is such a powerful game, the performance of playing kits is very important, and we are very happy with the new kit that PUMA has created for Italy. It is a great looking kit – we are a proud nation, and the design is also very important to us. In my long international playing career, I can certainly say this is the best kit I have worn for the Azzurri.”

Stefano Caroti, Chief Commercial Officer of PUMA SE commented, “We are very pleased with both the design and performance innovations that have been integrated into the new Italy home kit. Italy is one of our leading Power assets in world football, and we have worked hard with the FIGC to deliver a playing kit and replica wear that meets the high standards we set ourselves. We hope the Azzurri go on to achieve great things in it in Poland and Ukraine next year.”

PUMA has partnered with the FIGC for eight years, a period that saw the Italian National Team win the 2006FIFA World Cup in Germany.

A wardrobe essential for the bona fide Azzurri fan, the Italy Home Replica Short features an official FIGC badge and sporty styling. The gusset increases freedom of movement, complemented by the side leg panels. And for the finishing patriotic team touches, the tonal waistband panel features Italian flag-colored stitching and an embroidered ‘Italia’ script on the belt.

The global Sportlifestyle brand will continue to be the official technical partner to the SFV and licensed partner in relation to replica kits, fanwear and other merchandise, through the 2014 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2016.

On the day of the announcement, PUMA also launched the new home kit ahead of the Swiss national team’s fixture against The Netherlands in Amsterdam on Friday night.

Continuing with a partnership that started in 1998, PUMA will remain the official supplier of playing kits, training and representation apparel and equipment for all associated Swiss national teams, including the National A, Youth, Women’s and Futsal teams. PUMA will also extend its active partnerships of various SFV grass roots and youth initiatives, including the Credit Suisse Football Academies.

Part of the Power 12 range of PUMA kits that includes Italy, Uruguay, Czech Republic and Austria, the Switzerland 2012/13 home kit is unique as it incorporates the Swiss flag on the shirt, shorts and socks, in addition to the SFV badge. Engineered mesh at the front of the shirt increases breathability and a technical fabric greatly improves moisture wicking tendencies.

In addition to the SFV, PUMA also partners with Swiss international players Johan Djourou, Stephan Lichtsteiner, Diego Benaglio and Xavier Margairaz.

PUMA today announced that it has entered a new partnership with the German Bundesliga Champions, Borussia Dortmund. Effective from the 1st July 2012, this new technical partnership will see PUMA provide official playing kits for all associated Borussia Dortmund teams, including the senior mens and all youth teams, as well as becoming the club’s official partner in relation to replica kits, fanwear and other merchandise.

PUMA will provide playing kits for Borussia Dortmund for the 2012/13 season and for multiple seasons to follow. A full range of replica kits, fanwear and merchandise will also be launched at this time. As part of PUMA’s commitment to the partnership, the global Sportlifestyle brand is providing football boots for players of all levels within the Borussia Dortmund club who don’t have existing boot contracts, this part of the contract is already in effect for the 2011/12 season, as is the individual shoe contract with Borussia Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp which was announced at the beginning of the current 2011/12 season.

Franz Koch, Chief Executive Officer at PUMA SE commented: “We are really excited about this new addition to our football portfolio. Borussia Dortmund perfectly embodies the mix of sport and lifestyle, an ethos we share at PUMA. The brand values emphasised by both companies of joy, enthusiasm and passion make this partnership a perfect match. Our association with Borussia Dortmund will allow us to further expand our position as the clear number three football brand.”

Matthias Bäumer, General Manager at PUMA Germany says: “We are very pleased to be able to strengthen our portfolio with such a long-standing and successful Bundesliga club as Borussia Dortmund. The enthusiasm of this club and its unique fans will not only allow us to leave our mark in the field of Teamsports and merchandising, but provide our retail partners with innovative football product and marketing concepts.”

Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmund Club President said: “Borussia Dortmund is thrilled to enter this new partnership with PUMA. We share a great synergy with PUMA, we both have brand values that extend beyond simply performance on the pitch, and our work together in coming seasons will reflect this. From our very early conversations with PUMA it was abundantly clear that they wished to make Borussia Dortmund fans integral to the brand’s football campaigns in Germany, to value them as we do. This marketing focus was a key reason for us signing a partnership with PUMA, and we are excited about the prospect of implementing these plans for the 2012/13 season and beyond.”

Borussia Dortmund will become the third current Bundesliga club to partner with PUMA, joining VfB Stuttgart and TSG Hoffenheim in the global Sportlifestyle brand’s football family. PUMA also partners with numerous club teams such as Girondins Bordeaux, AS Monaco, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, SS Lazio and Olympiakos Piräus as well as international teams including Italy, Czech Republic, Switzerland, South Africa, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Chile and Uruguay. Borussia Dortmund will also join a host of international player assets that have joined PUMA in recent months including Sergio ‘Kun’ Aguero, Ramadel Falcao and Cesc Fabregas.

The new soccer jersey will be premiered today when “los aurinegros” now managed by Gregorio Perez confront San Lorenzo de Almagro (Argentina) on a friendly match held in the Centenario Stadium (Montevideo).
The new home soccer jersey is all yellow with green details on it. The green Nike Logo is on the top right while on the opposite the CBF’s badge where above it has five green stars (5 World Cup titles) and below it Brazil in the same color. It has a cut in “v” yellow collar neck (not seen since 2008/9 kits) with green on the inside. The shoulders are plain yellow, so are its sleeves with green hems.

The main color is blue with yellow and white details on it. The yellow Nike logo is on the top right while on the opposite the club’s badge with its details in white. It has a cut in “v” neck with yellow on its inside, plain blue shoulders, and same color are its sleeves with yellow hems.

Club atletico Nacional de Futbol one of the most succesful l soccer teams in Uruguay, and current 2010-11 Apertura Champions presented its new special edition soccer jersey for the 2011/12 season.

The new special edition jersey was premiered last week where the “Bolsos” lost against U de Chile in Santiago (Chile’s Capital) for the 2011 Copa Sudamericana. The new kit resembles Uruguay’s shirt worn in 1903 where the “Charruas” composed by all Nacional soccer players visited, and defeated Argentina by 3-2 back in 1903.

The new home soccer jersey has a retro style, is mostly all sky blue “celeste” with white details on it. Macri Sport Center runs across the front of the shirt in white letters, on the top right Umbro’s white logo with the added Bicentenario logo on top of it, while on the opposite the club’s badge, and above it three trophies (3 Intecontinentals). It has sky blue polo neck with white on its neckline. The shoulders maintain shirt’s same color and so its sleeves with no hems, but with the Uruguayan flag on the left one.
