Atletico de Madrid has revealed plans for a new 70,000-seat stadium that will replace its Vicente Calderon home.

Atletico de Madrid has revealed plans for a new 70,000-seat stadium that will replace its Vicente Calderon home.

The Calderon has been the home of the La Liga club since 1966 and was renovated ahead of Spain’s staging of the 1982 FIFA World Cup. The stadium currently has a capacity of 55,000, but with a seven-year season ticket waiting list and the club feeling constrained by the relative lack of space available at the Calderon, Atletico has announced its intention to create a “unique and unmistakable icon for the club and city”.

The new stadium will be based on a site of 85,000 square metres, compared to the Calderon’s 30,000 square metres, and will also include its own metro station. Atletico is determined that the venue will be developed to host more than club games, with the club envisioning the stadium as suitable for UEFA Champions League, World Cup and European Championship finals, along with being a major concert venue. Madrid is bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games, and although the stadium will not boast a permanent athletics track it will include the flexibility to install one for special events.

Work is scheduled to be finished in time for the 2015-16 season and Atletico president, Enrique Cerezo, said: “Today is an important day, I would say one of the most important days in the history of this club. There are not many times that you have the opportunity to live an important historic moment in the life of a sports club

Adidas have revived an old favorite for Euro 2012 with the 'Tango 12' unveiled on Friday as the official ball.

Adidas have revived an old favorite for Euro 2012 with the ‘Tango 12′ unveiled on Friday as the official ball.

It is based on a classic design used at the World Cup and European championships of the 1980s.

Adidas were criticized for their ‘Jabulani’ ball used at last year’s World Cup in South Africa where players complained it had an unreliable trajectory.

But CEO Herbert Hainer said on Friday they had tried to learn from their mistakes and promised the new Tango 12 would attract no such comments.

He said: “There is no-one better at developing balls than us. We have the most experience.

“We have tested the balls intensively, with teams and individual players like Bastian Schweinsteiger, David Villa.

“We have tested with goalkeepers, Petr Cech and Manuel Neuer. The ball was used in the Europa League. The comments we have received so far are all very positive.”

Speaking at Kiev’s Olympic Stadium, where the ball was on show, he added: “Of course, we are learning, but it is important to say this is the same procedure (as 2010).

“People criticize the ball, but as soon as the tournament starts there are other events going on and it is forgotten. Of course, we take every criticism seriously.

“We have to decide about two different facts. The design doesn’t have an impact on the behavior of the ball.

“The criticism of the Jabulani ball was that, when it was kicked hard, it flew further than they thought.

“There were two aspects — first, we tried to make the ball as round as possible so it can fly faster and, second, we played at altitude and the ball flew further.

“Of course, we are taking all the criticism and input. This ball has more stability than any other ball. The matt finish gives more grip, which players like. All we have heard so far is very positive…”

The Tango 12 features a modern interpretation of the hugely popular Tango design of the past with the colors of the flags of the two co-hosts incorporated into its design: red and white for Poland and yellow and blue for Ukraine.

“Everyone will like it,” he added, “… Apart from the goalkeepers — when they are beaten by it.”

FC Barcelona first-choice and world Champion with the Spanish team in South Africa in 2010 the athlete signed with a truly Brazilian football brand a valid contract for the next five years that includes exclusive material of the professional line Penalty S11, like gloves and cleats. “I am happy and satisfied with this agreement with Penalty, a legitimately Brazilian brand and of international projection, which I will be together in the coming seasons,” said Valdés. The goalkeeper starts using Penalty products in September, in the Spanish League.

Since the beginning of the year, when it presented its repositioning, Penalty has been investing heavily in the brand internationalization project. For this, it has opened an office in Spain, in order to assist in expanding and strengthening the brand in Europe, which since the beginning of 2010 is also a partner of Futsal National League (LNFS). “The sponsorship of Víctor Valdés, one of the greatest current football idols, is for Penalty an important accomplishment, the result of the great project of brand repositioning and internationalization. The endorsement of a player like him adds high value to Penalty and its products“, says Alexandre Estefano, Director International and R & D Penalty.

Víctor Valdés Arribas is one of the major references in the world of football. With over 400 games for Barcelona and four trophies Zamora conquered, which awards the best goalkeeper of the Spanish League, Valdés became a model for novice
players from around the world who dream of a goalkeeper career.

Betfair has partnered with Manchester United for its latest campaign, “Stars and Strikes”, as part of an integrated awareness drive for its mobile service, Betfair Mobile.

The campaign’s centrepiece, a YouTube spot, features six Manchester united stars, including Dimitar Berbatov, Ashley Young and Patrice Evra, competing against one another to see who can knock down as many bowling pins with a football in 40 seconds.

Taking footballers away from the pitch has yielded some great results for agencies and clients over the years from Bobby Moore appearing in a spot for the local pub in the 60s to Pele advertising viagra, Pitch takes a look at ten memorable ads featuring footballers.

Jamie Redknapp – Thomas Cook

We kick off (sorry) with one of the more recent ads on the list, featuring Jamie Redknapp and his missus Louise for holiday firm Thomas Cook. The cheddar-drenched spots, which were produced by Campbell Lace Beta, spearheaded an integrated campaign back in 2009, that did its best to sell the idea that the multi-millionaire pair would really book a once-a-year trip to Majorca with Thomas Cook, like us regular folk.

Gary Lineker – Walkers

In 1995, Walkers and AMV BBDO convinced ex-England striker, Gary Lineker to front its new TV campaign. The relationship has lasted 16 years, with the Pepsi-owned brand introducing several co-stars, including Terry Venables, Lionel Richie and a crying Gazza in that time, in attempt to keep things fresh. Indeed, such is old jug ears association with Walkers that the brand chose to temporarily rename the MOTD presenter’s favorite flavor of crisp to Salt ’n’ Lineker.

Ian Wright – Chicken Tonight

The Chicken Tonight spots, feature Arsenal and England’s Ian “Wright Wright Wright” dressed up like Hugh Hefner, but sounding like Lesley Phillips as he sung the catchy ’Chicken Tonight’ jingle. The spots were first produced by McCann Erikson in the UK, followed by DDB. As the face of the brand, Wright does his best to convince audiences that the ’sizzle and stir’ sauce is of a more sophisticated variety to competitors. It was the first interactive ad in the UK, enabling viewers to apply for a voucher if they pressed the red button during Wright’s chicken dance.

Gareth Southgate – Pizza Hut

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Gareth Southgate in 1996. The England international managed to convert his Euro 96 semi-final penalty-miss into a tongue-in-cheek advert for the pizza-chain in the same year. Supported by chums, Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle, Southgate is able to lift a bag of shame off his head and enjoy a nice slice of Pizza Hut’s finest.

Ian Wright and Shaun Wright-Phillips – Nintendo Wii

Nintendo were keen to push the family values of its Wii console in 2007, and what better family to go to but the uber-competitive Wrights. The ad, which was produced by Adam & Eve, tugs at the heartstrings as Ian and son, Shaun, play a round of Wii Tennis, giving viewers an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at life with the Wrights. Things take a turn for the worse however, once the former Crystal Palace striker is beaten, as he throws a wobbly and storms off.

Peter Crouch – T-Mobile

T-Mobile and Saatchi & Saatchi’s universally acclaimed ’Life’s for Sharing’ campaign roped in Peter Crouch, for this YouTube spot in 2009. The former Portsmouth player proved he’d moved on from the robot dance that made him popular with a series of brand spanking new moves. The lanky one fulfils his contractual agreement of briefly doing a bit of robotics, like a good sport, before doing the T-Mobile dance to Yazz’s 80s classic, ’The Only Way is Up’.

Thierry Henry – Renault Clio

Before the hand of Henry shattered Ireland’s hopes of progressing through to last year’s World Cup finals, the former Arsenal star was one of the coolest guys in sport. Renault and Publicis recognised this and managed to use it their advantage in 2002, with the creation of one of the best car advertising phrases ever, Va Va Voom.. Perhaps for Ireland fans though, the writing should have been on the wall years prior to their controversial encounter, as the Frenchman declares to the audience in the spot, “Look I don’t make the rules’ before aptly shrugging his shoulders.

Kevin Keegan – Brut

It’s a return to the decade that style forgot for the next ad. A time when men’s grooming was as simple as jumping in the shower before manly drenching in Brut. It decided that the testerone-fuelled duo of former England manager Kevin Keegan and British boxing-legend, the late, Henry Cooper, was enough to boost sales for the men’s grooming product at the time. Mullets, skipping, showers, this is multi-gender targeting at its finest. Old Spice Guy who?

Peter Schmeichel – Danepak

Imagine the scene in the Danepak marketing meeting. The team are sat cosliy around a table, sounding out ideas for their next TV ad, wondering how they’re going to shift loads of bacon. One of the team pipes up suggesting, “Lets dress Peter Schmeichel up as an old fashioned butcher and have him sing and dance with loads of other butchers’. The result is 30 seconds of pure awkwardness. Check out the spot, by Hooper Galton, and marvel at the all-conquering combo that is Peter Schmeichel and bacon, what’s not to love.

John Barnes – Mars

For Mars’ 2010 World-Cup promotions they turned to Liverpool legend John Barnes to re-record his rap in ’World in Motion’, New Order’s official song for England’s 1990 World Cup campaign. With the Inbetweeners Blake Harrison filling in for Keith Allen, the ad, by AMV BBDO, was part of a wider campaign around the tournament. All together now: “Catch me if you can, ’cos I’m the England man…”

adidas and the Scottish Football Association have today unveiled the brand new home kit for 2012/13 matches.

The traditional dark indigo colour with hallmark adidas white three stripes has been proudly retained, but the shirt features an array of design innovations.

The badge
The new kit crest pays homage to the round badge used on the 1974 shirt worn at the World Cup in West Germany. This new adaptation of an iconic emblem of Scottish folklore features a woven badge with the embroidery applied with satin stitching. It features the Royal Standard (aka the Lion Rampant of Scotland) and marks the founding of the Scottish FA in 1873.

Bespoke imprint on the chest
This unique Saltire embossing incorporates a range of sources from around Scotland that champion the Scottish FA’s rich footballing history – including the old and new Hampden Park, the Lion Rampant, the Thistle, the 1928 ball used in the 5-1 demolition of England at Wembley Stadium, the Fleur De Lis and the date 1873 – the year of the Scottish FA’s foundation.

The collar
The polo collar features a snap button, and a printed Saltire on the back of the collar. The Saltire is also embroidered on the front placket of the collar.

Shorts and socks
White shorts, which incorporate Climacool technology, feature a tie cord and kit crest. The traditional colour rotation for the kit is completed with Poppy coloured socks. The socks feature the word ALBA, which is the Gaelic word for Scotland, and a new construction features materials that add comfort to the foot-bed and provide Achilles support.

Goalkeeper jersey
The home goalkeeper jersey is a simple but elegant mix of silver / dark Indigo which links it to the outfield home jersey. The iconic printed Saltire is featured on the back and ClimaCool technology is incorporated for additional ventilation.

Technology
Advancements in technology have yet again allowed adidas to push the boundaries in the development of their apparel giving the Scotland players an extra edge on the pitch as well as looking the part.

TechFit™ - On the field, the players’ kits will incorporate adidas’ cutting edge TechFit™ technology, to help improve speed, increase endurance capabilities and enhance awareness. This works by stabilizing and focusing the muscles’ energy to generate explosive acceleration and deliver maximum power output.

Climacool™ - The shirts also feature adidas ClimaCool™ technology, a mixture of heat and moisture controlling materials, ventilation channels and 3D fabrics which improve air flow to the skin in the key heat zones.De Lis and the date 1873 – the year of the Scottish FA’s foundation.

French customs workers destroyed the soccer jersey that David Trezeguet wore during the 1998 World Cup final, because they thought it was fake. However, the jersey, was an original one bought over the internet by a renowned retro jersey collector.
Olivier Demolis, the collector, paid over 10,000 dollars to a Brazilian citizen over the web. He got a call from the custom telling him to present himself at their office because they have a message for him. When he got to the customs office, he was told the shirt was destroyed because it was fake. Now he is suing the French government to get back his 10,000 dollars.

One of the most sold soccer jeserys in Latin America is the Mexican National soccer jersey. Mexico in this occasion is one of the few countries that had as many presences in the world cup as Spain and Italy. The classical soccer jersey uniform of the North American country(as many may know) consists of a green jersey, white shorts and re socks, which of course are the colors of the Mexican flag. Since its foundation we have not seen many major design changes or touches; however in the 1998 world cup being held in France we see a major change on its design. The responsible of this change was the ABA Sports, that the decided to include La piedra del sol (Stone of the Sun) which represented the face of the TOnatiuh an Aztec God Sun. The form was easily introduced on the soccer jersey on its back and front with a dark tonality and its classic green background. The mexican people were so in love with this jersey design that we decided to write about it on this segment as one of the most remarkable soccer jerseys that the Mexican National team ever had.
